The naval sector continues to have good results in Spain, recovering the ground lost during the recession years. In a difficult market, competing against such markets as the Asian one, the fact that in 2017 Spanish private shipyards were awarded 37 new contracts for a value of EUR 850M was very positive, as well as the fact that Spain was the first country in Europe and the third in the world in terms of the number of fishing vessels under construction, the second EU country in terms of the number of tugs, and the second country in Europe and third in the world in terms of the number of dredgers. These data reflect the importance of the Spanish naval sector and its international significance. They have also been improved by the recent purchase by Saudi Arabia of 5 corvettes from Navantia in 2018.
A key factor in the re-emergence of the Spanish naval sector has been the fact that quality vessels are built with short delivery deadlines and a high level of specialisation, tailor-made for each customer.
The challenges faced by the European and Spanish naval sector is getting governments to regard it as strategic and give political support to protect and promote the naval industry against the threat of Asian shipyards.
